Curiosity Part 2: Before You Ask

I have tried to write this post about ten different times, but I’m sticking with this version for the sake of my sanity. The reason why i’ve struggled writing this is, I don’t want to deter anyone from trying to gain a better understanding of the disabled community. As I said in my last post, I like getting the chance to share my story, however, I feel it’s important to address where questions can become inappropriate.

IMPORTANT: There is no such thing as a bad/inappropriate question on this site. I started this platform so I could address questions, labels and stigmas, so bring them on. Keep in mind, I can only answer based on my experience and not the disabled community as a whole. If you have a question for me, contact me here.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding wether or not a question is appropriate:

  • How would you feel if you were asked the same question?

  • What is the intent behind the question?

  • Are you having an active conversation with this person, or are you just coming up to them to ask the question?*

  • Can you find the answer on Google?

  • Is it regarding using the washroom and or bathing*

    • If yes, is the person you are asking asking for help?

  • Is it about their body, genitalia, or sexual activity*

    • If yes, are you and that person wanting to pursue a physical relationship?

  • Do you need to know?

*I’m going to expand on these topics in coming posts.

These guidelines aren’t all in-compassing, but should give you a good starting point to work from. Respect is key.

I hope this helps!
